SHEIN is taking meaningful strides towards sustainable fashion with its “evoluSHEIN by Design” product initiative. evoluSHEIN by Design is aimed at accelerating the use of responsible materials and manufacturing processes. Qualifying products must meet an “evoluSHEIN Standard”, requiring that they be produced with at least 30% preferred materials like recycled polyester or forest-safe viscose manufactured by suppliers that have achieved high social compliance verified by third-party audits. Products are then shipped with packaging made with more sustainable or recycled content.
Some key actions SHEIN is taking on as part of this evoluSHEIN by Design initiative include:
- Choosing materials with a lower carbon footprint eg recycled polyester.
- Using wood-derived materials like viscose and paper packaging from sources that don’t endanger vital ancient forests.
- Repurposing textile surplus leftover from other brands’ production
- Using packaging made of more sustainable materials eg recycled PET
- Promoting production techniques that conserve water and energy resources eg Digital Transfer Printing and Cool Transfer Printing
SHEIN aims to source 50% of its branded products through the evoluSHEIN by Design initiative by 2030. This major initiative underscores SHEIN’s long-term commitment to promoting more responsible practices within its operations and helping transform the wider industry to be more resilient, equitable, and circular through its on-demand model.
SHEIN also focuses on reducing the water footprint of critical materials like denim. The brand has partnered with NTX to adopt an alternative denim production method called Cool Transfer Printing. This technology uses a digital printer to stimulate the effects of washing denim without the need for traditional water-intensive processes. As verified by Bureau Veritas in October 2023, it uses 70.5% less water than conventional denim washing methods.
